While there are several different forms of injury that result in a workers compensation claim, one that many people might pass over or not report, is that of work-related illnesses. Various kinds of work can be taxing on the human body. Even lighter work, like desk work, has its fair share of illnesses that can come from it. These illnesses can range from body related illnesses like carpel tunnel syndrome to major body system illnesses like cancer. If you are experiencing illness, as a result of your job, let us know!
Tendinitis is the inflammation of a tendon, which is the fibrous cord that attach between muscle and bone. This condition causes pain around the sites of joints. Tendinitis is usually felt around the shoulders, wrists, knees, ankles and elbows and is caused by the human body doing the same movement over and over. Tendinitis is usually treatable with rest and relaxation of the joint, but if not treated can lead to more serious problems like the rupturing of a tendon. If you are experiencing join pain, try and adjust the way you’re working to relieve joint stress.
Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is a very common work related issue because it stems from the repetitive use of hands and wrists. Because so many jobs these days take place in front of a computer, with typing hour after hour, it makes sense that handsome fingers and wrists would have undue stress placed on them. This illness is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist, which cause pain up and in to the hand and fingers. Typically, this is cause by improper hand and wrist placement at your desk and, while treatable, needs to be addressed promptly.
There are numerous respiratory illnesses that can be caused through work. While these types of illnesses can be cause by things like a moldy humidifier or ventilation systems that are not taken care of properly, they can also be caused by simple contact with other co-workers who are not getting proper medical treatment. Things like pneumonia are commonly passed from person to person and, if not treated, can lead to severe illness. Other things, like lung cancer, can be the result of work related machinery and air systems that are no being taken care of properly.
The biggest disease that can be caused through work related issues, is cancer. While businesses have taken great strides in getting rid of harmful building materials, like asbestos, not all buildings are safe from this issue. Older buildings may have asbestos in their walls which, if disturbed, can lead to lung cancer from inhalation. Other jobs, such as jobs where heavy chemicals or radiation are being handled, are also at risk. Because radiation can permeate through walls and large distances, it is a dangerous player when it comes to work-related illnesses and cancer. If you think your job is putting you at risk, let us know immediately.
